Welcome to the Health Inequalities Assessment Toolkit
The HIAT aims to support people to integrate an intersectional equity lens into research, and consider how people with lived experience and policy or practice expertise can help in this process.
The Health Inequalities Assessment Tool has five sections – You can work through these in whichever order you want

It may be helpful to move backwards and forwards between sections as research ideas develop. Click on the link for a template if you want to record key points/decisions (MSWord, PDF)
Sections 1 to 4 have three parts encouraging you to:
- REFLECT on how you can embed an equity lens throughout the research process
- INVOLVE people with relevant lived experience and other stakeholders
- DIVE DEEPER into the issues raised. There are links to additional resources, including examples of how other researchers have addressed the issues covered in each section.
Section 5 encourages you to think about the responsibilities researchers should have in designing and delivering research that can contribute to action to address the social inequalities creating health inequalities.
